Epilogues

Concertant Classics I 2022 (ALBUM)

Maksim Shtrykov, clarinet • Misuzu Tanaka, piano

Epilogues honors three composers' swan songs for a wind, inextricably interwoven with piano parts of wondrous sophistication. They are not mere postscripts to careers, pale codicils to august musical testaments, a lesser afterglow. Indeed not! These sonates-adieux by three towering masters are among the very finest works for clarinet.

Final works tempt scholars to encapsulate composers' creativity and motivation, rather than to chronicle their mature humanity and inspired whimsicality. Performers, though, working within the score, come from a different place. Maksim Shtrykov and Misuzu Tanaka immersed themselves in the sunset-glow creativity of these late works, the profundity and beauty of the music, rooted in consummate compositional craft. This intensified their exploration of approaches to its interpretation. Both musicians know the expressive, multihued clarinets and pianos of the composers' eras – the forerunner instruments. Out of this hard-won awareness of style, technique, and sheer sound production, their remarkable fluency has emerged, as they play these scores on instruments of our time. This album is the result of that work.
